• Wisconsin Deer Hunting at Turtle Creek

Welcome to the heart of deer country, located in the rolling hills of western Wisconsin, at the northern edge of the Driftless Area. We are free range, whitetail deer outfitters in the state that tops the record books year after year for trophy whitetails.

At Turtle Creek Outfitters, you'll find hardwood ridges, tangled creek bottoms, agricultural fields, and trophy bucks. We've reduced our maximum number of hunters to just a few per year. Our under-harvesting (along with having great neighbors) has helped maintain a steady stream of trophy bucks. The past few years have been very successful.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Everything I’ve read and most everybody I’ve spoken with said 2015 produced an elusive rut. Record warm temps, abundant sunshine, moon phase, to many doe, standing crops, you name it, I’ve heard it. Who knows….but don’t tell Jeremy, cuz he won’t believe you. Where ever he hunted in 2015, there was action. If he was hunting MN, there was action, if he was at TCO, he was on in the heart of the rut. Jeremy is another of our regulars.

One day at TCO, he watched a shooter 8 chasing a doe for 5 hours. His tree seemed to be the center of their universe. Down in the oaks they would chase, then across a bean field, disappear, only to re-appear in a hay field on his other side 20 minutes later. Disappear into the shadows, re-appear in open sunshine. Once you think they are gone, here they come. At one point, they came running down the ATV trail 5 yards from the stand. No grunting could stop them. Hear them coming, running, draw, grunt, louder, louder, more,…..there they go. All in a matter of seconds. Damn!!

On another warm, clear November day, a small buck appears 10 yards in front of him. Although Jeremy doesn’t see a second buck, he knows another is close by since the first buck is posturing, ready for a fight. On queue, a 10 point busts onto the scene. The two bucks spar as Jeremy has a front row seat. Sparring stops, Jeremy shoots the 10 point through the heart (I checked the heart). The bucks then continue fighting for another 15 seconds or so before the 10 drops dead about 25 yards away. The smaller buck then leaves with a doe, who had been watching from behind.

Nice shot Jeremy!

I don’t have any trail cams of this buck. We had never seen him before.

Congratulations to Rodger on taking this trophy archery buck, we call “The Dude.” While in stand, Rodger heard a deer crossing the creek. Turning toward the tree, Rodger noticed a buck raking the brush above him, then continued coming slowly thru the thick brush. While walking toward Rodger, The Dude stopped and looked up at him in the tree. Rodger thought he was busted…….then the Dude slowly passed by his right side. With his bow hanging on the left side of the tree, Rodger had to let The Dude pass by, then turn 180 degrees, quietly, to make the quartering away shot at 15 yards. After 60 yards, it was over. Excellent shot!

If you are looking to get away from the high volume, production outfitters, TCO might be the place for you. Rodger had hunted 5 different states in five years, without bagging a buck. Two hours here at Turtle Creek Outfitters and Rodger tagged out. There’s no guarantees here, but if you are well prepared, put in your time in stand, and have a bit of luck, then maybe you’ll get an opportunity to harvest your buck of a lifetime. We hope you do!

Shoot Straight!

On the last page of the September 2015 magazine, Bowhunter, I found an insightful hunting perspective from Dwight Schuh. At 70, Dwight reflects on his hunting and changes in hunting over the past 50 years. I would have added a link to the article, but couldn’t find it online. So I paraphrase Dwight here.

Dream Big. Some things may seem impossible, but if you don’t dream on, it’ll never happen.

Hunt Honorably. The only honor in hunting comes from doing things right, legally and ethically.

Respect Others. Trespassers, fights over stand sights and trail cam theft have become common. Those responsible are not hunters.

The Good Old Days Are Now. Hunting is changing, mostly for the better, with many wild game populations being plentiful.

Keep Priorities Straight. Enjoy hunting, but be careful not to sacrifice family and friends for it.

Savor The Moment. Its tempting to grumble about being skunked, bad weather and so on. Every day in the field is a privilege, enjoy whatever happens!

While visiting Mom in northern WI, three hours from Turtle Creek Outfitters, my dog Hudson, jumped a fawn near Mom’s pond. The fawn bed down in brush for several hours before showing itself along the pond edge again. We watched for three hours as the fawn, very slowly, walked back and forth along the pond edge, always staying in a fifty foot area.  At times the fawn would not move a step for ten minutes. Twice it bed down, both times partially in the water.

You’ve heard that does leave their fawns after birth to keep scent away from them, right? Or that fawns have no scent, which I don’t believe, since so many bear and coyote prey on fawns.  How would the predators find the fawns if they didn’t have some scent? Anyway, the doe was not with the fawn for 6-8 hours. Then, just as darkness set in, the doe appeared, reunited with the fawn, and off they went into the woods together.

Archery season is not far off now, with the July 4th weekend coming up, deer season will open soon.

We’ve been working on food plots, deer stands and the lodge. The biggest job was a new metal roof for the lodge. Many thanks to the crew of six that worked on the metal roof, finishing it in two days. That’s a big relief to have the roof finished!

In the meantime, the fireflies have put on quite the spectacular shows, that lasted for a couple weeks, earlier in June. Once you start to study the fireflies, or lightning bugs, closely, you can decipher various patterns, blink rates, duration, intensity, burn sequence and so on. Quit the show!
